What it looks like to be a UMB CURE Scholar.

After-School and Saturday Academy

Middle School

Middle schoolers complete three curriculum tracks to prepare their foundational science skills and research knowledge.

6th Grade: Food Science

Scholars will use food as a tool to learn basic scientific and laboratory principles as well as concepts of scientific research. Scholars will be able to use these skills to understand how nutrition impacts health and can influence illness risk and cancer development/ treatment.

7th Grade: Anatomy

Scholars will develop an in-depth and thorough understanding of human anatomy at the macroscopic level. This course will allow scholars to complete relevant dissections from various organ systems as well as create a capstone project around disease and cancer and how it impacts specific body systems.

8th Grade: Coding/ Robotics

Scholars will learn basic skills around coding and robotics to compete in VEX IQ competitions during the school year. This course will allow for scholars to program robots to complete various tasks based on the competition requirements.

High School

High schoolers participate in a weekly Saturday academy focused on biomedical research and real-world application. Scholars will explore concepts of biology and medicine as they take on the role of various medical professionals to solve real-world problems. Scholars will learn concepts around epidemiology and public health to understand how health care works on a macro/population level.

Summer Academy

Middle School

The UMB CURE Scholars Program provides summer camp experiences for middle school scholars. The summer camp experience features collaboration with various professional groups across campus including the School of Dentistry and the Institute for Genome Sciences. Scholars also engage in individualized academic enrichment to lessen “summer learning loss.”

High School

High school scholars are paid through the Baltimore City YouthWorks initiative and engage in several learning experiences from forensics, pharmacy, engineering, and public and community health to CPR certification.

Annual Special Events

White Coat Ceremony with Cure Scholars

White Coat/Pinning Ceremony

Scholars will don their white coats and receive pins for each curriculum track completed. Families can support their scholars and celebrate their achievements.
