Frequently Asked Questions
Is UMB Housing just for UMB students? ▾
UMB Housing is open to UMB students, students at other local colleges and universities (UMBC, Johns Hopkins, Morgan State, Coppin State, University of Baltimore, CCBC, Towson, etc.), faculty and staff at UMB, UMMC, or the VA Hospital, as well as their spouse or domestic partner. If you are not sure if you qualify, email us at umbhousing@umaryland.edu so we can confirm your affiliation.
Is short-term housing available? ▾
Yes, short-term housing is available to interns, fellows, residents, and visiting staff affiliated with UMB, UMMC, the VA Hospital, and some other local colleges and universities. All short-term apartments are in Fayette Square. Short-term housing is not available to UMB/USM students.
For our short-term residents, there is also an amenities package available at an additional fee which will provide linens, dishes, pots and pans, etc. for your use during your stay. More information about the amenities package will be provided after you sign your license.
If you are interested in short-term housing, please complete the online application. There is no application fee or security deposit required.
Can international students live in UMB Housing? ▾
UMB Housing is a great option for international students. Our policies make it very easy for international students to sign a license since we do not require a security deposit or credit check. Our location is also ideal as you are getting to know a new city. We are located on campus, within a few blocks of all the UMB schools. Local bus lines stop right outside of Fayette Square and the Light Rail is only a few blocks away.
Can faculty and staff live in UMB Housing? ▾
Yes, UMB or UMMC faculty and staff as well as their spouse or domestic partner may live in UMB Housing. Faculty and staff from other local colleges, universities, and hospitals are not eligible to live in UMB Housing.
Can my spouse or domestic partner live with me? ▾
Yes, residents who are married or have a legal domestic partner should submit the spouse/domestic partner addendum and submit it to the UMB Housing office. If you would like to live with someone who is not your spouse or legal domestic partner, they would also need to be eligible for UMB Housing and sign their own license.
What is included in the rental cost? ▾
Apartments are rented by the bed, not by the unit. Rent includes all utilities (electric, water, sewer, garbage) and WiFi.
In Fayette Square, each bedroom is furnished with a bed frame, full or queen mattress, desk, desk chair, dresser, and bedside table. There is also a dining table with chairs, couch, chair, end table, and coffee table in the common area of the 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 7-bedroom units.
At Pascault Row, each apartment is furnished with a bed frame, queen mattress, bookshelf, dining table and chairs, end table, and built-in bureau with drawers. 1- and 2-bedroom apartments also include a sofa, chair, and coffee table.
Pets are allowed at Fayette Square apartments. All residents must register their pet(s) and pay a one-time $350 registration fee. There is also a $25/month per pet fee. All pets must be registered with Baltimore City in accordance with any city guidelines. Please review the pet policy for more information on the types and sizes of animals allowed.
Unfortunately, pets are not allowed at Pascault Row.
Are there laundry facilities in the community? ▾
All of our communities have laundry facilities available. At Fayette Square, residents pay a one-time fee at the beginning of their license and have unlimited laundry usage. Laundry facilities are available on every other floor in the Tower and in the basement of the Historic building.
In Pascault Row, laundry fees are included in the rental cost. Laundry facilities are located in the basement of the building.
When should I apply for housing? ▾
Housing applications are accepted on a rolling basis and we encourage you to apply as soon as you know you would like to live in UMB Housing. Typically, licenses for the Fall Semester begin to be sent in early January; licenses for the Spring Semester start to go out in November. If you will be moving in at another point during the year, the license will be sent based on your requested move-in date.
Do you accept financial aid? ▾
Yes! Both of our communities accept financial aid. Residents in Pascault Row will have their housing fees applied to their student account and all financial aid will be automatically applied to the balance.
Fayette Square residents make payments directly to UMB Housing. Residents must complete the Financial Aid deferment form and then submit their payment once they receive their financial aid disbursement from the university.
How can I cancel my license? ▾
The Housing License Agreement is a legally binding agreement. Residents who wish to cancel should review the termination clauses of the agreement prior to requesting a cancellation.
If a resident is approved to cancel because they are no longer attending UMB (or another local college or university) and they submit the cancellation form and all supporting documentation prior to the move-in date on their Housing License Agreement, the housing cancellation fee will be waived. If they withdraw from the university after the move-in date and their cancellation is approved, there will be a $1000 cancellation fee.
All cancellation requests take up to 15 business days to review and must contain supporting documentation. Failure to take occupancy of the apartment does not release a resident from the terms of the Housing License Agreement.
