




Keynote speaker Freeman A. Hrabowski III, PhD, president of UMBC and recently named one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time magazine, will headline a stellar cast of marshals and guests at the University's commencement ceremony on May 18 at 2 p.m. at 1st Mariner Arena. The governor and mayor join representatives of the University, the Medical System, public-private partner Advanced Particle Therapy, and the School of Medicine in breaking ground for the $200 million Maryland Proton Treatment Center at the BioPark. The center will bring the most advanced radiation technology in cancer treatment to the Baltimore-Washington area.
A team of more than 150 University of Maryland doctors, nurses, and professional staff conducted the most extensive face transplant in the world in a 36-hour procedure on March 19-20. It followed 10 years of research on a new technique that includes jaws, teeth, and tongue.
The University and the College Park campus have combined resources to form University of Maryland: MPowering the State, to better serve students, attract faculty, and boost research and commercialization.
Dr. Perman, Mayor Launch Lexington Market Healthy Food Project
"Get Fresh Lexington" will increase healthy food options at Baltimore's landmark public market, a neighbor of the University. President Jay A. Perman, MD, who co-chairs the Westside Task Force with Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, JD '95, cited the University's commitment to the health of the community.
Congressional Forum Highlights Extended Dental Care
U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings joined Sen. Barbara Mikulski and Sen. Benjamin Cardin at a forum on children's dental health care at the Carey School of Law. The forum honored the memory of Deamonte Driver, 12, whose death in 2007 from an untreated infected tooth spurred the School of Dentistry to lead a campaign to extend dental health care to underserved people across the state.
