The history of slavery in America will always be tied to institutions across our country. The University of Maryland, Baltimore is no exception. The 1807 Commission on Slavery and Racism aims to investigate UMB's connections to slavery and racism. The goal is to provide a framework for a better understanding of generations of racialized trauma.

The focus of the 1807 Commission includes evaluating research into the names of buildings at UMB. and providing recommendations on appropriate reparative actions.

Representatives from History Associates Incorporated (HAI) will assist the work of the commission. Beginning with a phase 1 report, HAI’s research will explore UMB’s historical ties to slavery, racism, and the devaluation of marginalized groups. This work will inform our conversations and actions toward being a more anti-racist institution.
