Scholarships and Grants

Endowed Scholarships

Endowed scholarships are competitive awards requiring a record of demonstrated academic achievement and commitment to the community. Currently enrolled students at the University of Maryland, Baltimore may be eligible to apply for one or more endowed scholarships. Students entering into their last semester of study are not eligible to apply.

The application window for AY 24/25 is closed. The application for AY 25/26 will open in February. 

Hans R. Wilhelmsen Memorial Scholarship Fund for Dental and Medical Education 
Scholarship Awards: $1,200 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund shall be to encourage and financially assist students who, after receiving a dental degree from an accredited school, choose to pursue a medical degree at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, or who, after receiving a medical degree from an accredited school, choose to pursue a dental degree at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicant must be currently enrolled as a medical or dental student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore and fit the student profile established above.

Jon Christian Merkel Scholarship Fund 
Scholarship Awards: $2,000 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund is to benefit students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. 

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be able to demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in service.

Lois Young-Thomas Memorial Scholarship and Leadership Guild Endowment 
Scholarship Awards: $7,500 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund is to provide one or more scholarships for full-time students enrolled in a professional or graduate program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicant must be a Maryland resident enrolled as a full-time student in a UMB professional or graduate school, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate leadership skills and service achievement within the University and/or community. Preference will be given to incoming first-year students who demonstrate financial need and express interest in practicing in Maryland upon graduation.

PNC (Mercantile) Scholarship Endowment 
Scholarship Awards: $1,500 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund shall be to provide endowed support for one or more annual scholarships for students enrolled in a professional program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be enrolled in a professional program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated financial need and an interest in service. 

Presidential Scholarship Fund for the University of Maryland 
Scholarship Awards: $2,400 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund shall be to provide endowed support of scholarships for students enrolled at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. 

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be able to demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in service.

 

 

 

The Southern Management Corporation Scholarship Fund 
Scholarship Awards: $2,250 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund shall be to provide annual scholarships for students enrolled at the University of Maryland Baltimore following graduation from one of the following community colleges: Baltimore City Community College, Community College of Baltimore County, or Prince George's Community College.

REQUIREMENTS

Preference will be given to students who live in a Southern Management Corporation community, as well as those students with the most outstanding academic record. Students enrolled in the Carey School of Law are not eligible for this award. 

 

The Bess and Franklin S. Gladhill Presidential Scholarship Fund 
Scholarship Awards: $2,400 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Fund shall be to provide endowed support for scholarships for students enrolled at the University. Scholarships will be awarded based on academic achievement and financial need.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be able to demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.

State Scholarships

State Scholarships are available to students who are classified as residents of Maryland by the Office of the Registrar. Please find additional scholarship details by clicking the link(s) below.

Grants

Federal Pell Grant

Undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need based on their FAFSA, may be eligible for the Federal Pell grant. Students who have already earned a bachelor's degree or are enrolled in a graduate or professional degree program are not eligible for the Pell Grant. 

Eligibility and the grant amount are determined by the following factors: 

  • Student Aid Index (SAI) number calculated from a student's FAFSA information.
  • The cost of attendance
  • Enrollment status.

The maximum Federal Pell Grant award for the 2024-2025 academic year is $7,395.

University Grant

The University Grant is institutional grant funding that may be awarded to students in eligible programs who demonstrate exceptional financial need and have completed their FAFSA by the March 1 priority deadline. Due to limited funding, all students who meet the eligibility criteria may not be awarded; eligible students are automatically awarded until funds are exhausted. University Grant awards are not guaranteed each academic year. 

University Grant awards can vary from $4,000 to $9,000, depending on the student's program and enrollment status. 

State Scholarships

State Scholarships are available to students who are classified as residents of Maryland by the Office of the Registrar. Please find additional scholarship details by clicking the links below. 

MHEC awards the following:

MHEC funds the Graduate/Professional School ScholarshipStudents in eligible programs, who are classified as Maryland residents, and have submitted their FAFSA by our March 1 priority deadline are automatically considered for this award. There is no separate application. Scholarships are awarded based on set criteria, with priority given to students with lower Student Aid Indexes (SAIs), as determined by the FAFSA, until funds are exhausted. The annual award amount varies each year based on the funding provided by MHEC and number of eligible students. Awards are not guaranteed, even for those students that meet the initial requirements.
