Red Card Reimagined: Maryland Carey Law Assists MLS Restorative Justice

Inspired by Vice Dean Deborah Eisenberg’s research at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, Major League Soccer (MLS) has adopted a restorative justice approach to addressing discriminatory incidents within the league. This policy, implemented in February 2024, emphasizes education, prevention, and cultural awareness, allowing offenders and those harmed to collaboratively resolve issues, which promotes accountability and reintegration. The initiative has led to a significant decrease in discriminatory incidents and strengthened team cohesion.
