IT Security Best Practices

At UMB, we all play a role in keeping our information safe from hackers. Here are some simple tips to help protect your personal data and fight off potential attacks.

  • Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
MFA adds an extra layer of security. If you get an unexpected alert from your MFA app, don’t approve it. Hackers may be trying to access your account. Always reject any request you didn’t initiate. To learn more about how UMB uses MFA click here
  • Keep Your Software Updated
Make sure your computer’s operating system and software are up to date. Turn on automatic updates to stay protected.
  • Use Antivirus Protection
Install trusted antivirus software and keep it updated. Enable automatic updates for virus definitions to ensure maximum protection.
  • Enable a Firewall
Turn on local firewall software for an extra layer of defense against hackers trying to access your computer.
  • Create Strong, Unique Passwords
Don’t reuse passwords across accounts. Use a password manager to create and store strong passwords for each account.
  • Back Up Your Important Files
Regularly back up your files using a secure, cloud-based storage option. Make local backups, too, in case of a ransomware attack.
  • Secure Your Devices
Always log off or shut down computers when not in use. Make sure your device locks automatically after a short period of inactivity.
  • Watch Out for Suspicious Emails and Calls
Hackers may send phishing emails or make calls to trick you into sharing personal information. Be cautious with any unexpected messages.
  • Don’t Click on Unknown Attachments or Links
Before clicking a link in an email, hover over it to see where it leads. If it looks suspicious, don’t click it.
  • Use the Phish Alert button
If an email seems suspicious, report the email using the Phish Alert button. For more information on how to report Phishing and Spam email click here.
  • Avoid Public Wi-Fi Without a VPN
Public Wi-Fi can be risky. Use a VPN with MFA to protect your information when connecting to public networks.
