UMB COVID-19 Travel Guidance

October 8, 2020 (updated April 21, 2022)

UMMS and UMB will permit work-related travel (domestic and international), with review and approval.

o   Travelers must follow most current CDC and destination (country) guidance.

o   At UMMS, approval by the department Vice President or above.

o   At UMB, domestic travel requires supervisor approval. International travel to some high-risk countries, as categorized by the U.S. State Department, requires Dean or Vice President approval.

·         UMMS and UMB encourage all individuals be tested before and after all travel.

·         UMMS discourages all (work-related and personal) non-essential travel, both domestic and international.

·         These policies may differ slightly in regard to approved travel for unvaccinated individuals:

o   Approved work-related travel will not be reimbursed by UMMS for individuals who are not vaccinated.

o   UMB will permit travel for vaccinated individuals only or those with an approved exemption.

·         UMMS and UMB may differ on travel requirements should UMMS move to Level Red of the UMMS Tiered Approach due to the nature of academic grant requirements and obligated, pre-scheduled travel for UMB employees.

o   Students must receive permission from their school for university-related domestic travel.

International Travel

Faculty and Staff

  • For UMB-related travel, UMB faculty and staff must complete the Essential Travel Justification Form available here BEFORE purchasing tickets or traveling.
  • Travel to countries designated as U.S. State Department Advisory Level 1 and 2 require only a supervisor’s approval.
  • Travel to U.S State Department Advisory Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) and Advisory Level 4 (DO NOT TRAVEL) countries require a briefing by International SOS prior to travel, approval of the appropriate Dean/VP or their designee, and the final approval of the Provost, in addition to the requirements for Level 1 and 2.
  • UMB-related international travel must be booked using one of the three UMB-approved travel agencies; be approved in the UMB online travel request system BEFORE travel; and include the signed and witnessed UMB Risk Acknowledgement form.
  • Further instructions are available here or contact Bonnie Bissonette.

Students

International travel for students is allowed and will be evaluated based on the location of the travel and the student’s demonstration of the risks of travel to that particular location (based on U.S. State Department advisories) and travel generally. To help faculty advisors, Deans, and the Provost make their decision about approving travel, they will evaluate the student’s completed UMB Student International Travel Form which gives information about the destination and the student’s understanding and acknowledgment of the risks of travel at this time.

To start the process, access the UMB International Travel Request Form for Students (updated Feb. 15, 2022) that is available using DocuSign. Complete instructions are included in the form itself, and as each part of the process is completed and signed or initialed, it moves to the next required section automatically.

International Students and Scholars

  • International students and scholars on UMB-sponsored visas who are seeking to travel internationally for personal reasons are required to complete an e-form in Sunapsis reporting your travel and to book an appointment with an OIS advisor to discuss your specific circumstances.
  • International students and scholars on F-1 and J-1 visas should make sure they have valid travel signatures on their I-20 or DS-2019 (signed within one year of your return date). Contact OIS if you have any questions about this.
  • Up-to-date travel information about the latest requirements for travel and reentry to the U.S. is available on the UMB COVID-19 website.
