Updated COVID-19 Isolation/Quarantine Protocols

October 10, 2022

To the UMB Community:

I am sharing some recent updates to the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) COVID-19 Isolation and Quarantine Protocols for members of our community who do not provide patient care.

These protocols are aligned with the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance. The email you will receive if you submit our COVID-19 Report Form is very similar to the CDC's guidance, but UMB's form guidance will provide more local nuance, including where you can get tested nearby. (If the COVID-19 Report Form is inaccessible, please email UMBOccupationalHealth@som.umaryland.edu to submit your COVID-19 case.)

The guidance provides instructions for what to do during your isolation period, when it is safe to end isolation, and what to do in case of an exposure. The primary change is to make testing optional in decisions about returning to work or school.

Please consult your health care provider to help manage your COVID-19 infection and recovery, including decisions about medications.

Complete information can be found here. These protocols apply to non-clinical students and UMB and Faculty Physicians, Inc. (FPI) employees not involved in patient care.

Please note that the CDC guidance for health care workers is different than the protocols for those not involved in clinical care.

  • Any employees or students who work even part time in University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) facilities must follow the UMMS instructions. This includes clinical faculty with patient responsibilities and students designated as clinical students by their schools and programs.
  • FPI clinical employees also must follow the UMMS instructions.
  • Students or employees at other clinical sites should follow the specific site instructions if available.

As always, please stay home if you are sick with symptoms of illness that may be infectious, including COVID-19, colds, or the flu. Take this time to consider getting your flu shot and COVID-19 booster by visiting umaryland.edu/flu.

Stay healthy,
