Central Africa- Public Health Emergency of International Concern- mpox

August 14, 2024

On August 14, the World Health Organization declared the ongoing mpox outbreak in central Africa to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Although UMB travelers are likely to be at low risk for contracting mpox, International Operations advises the following for UMB personnel conducting travel to central Africa (especially the countries of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda):

  • Avoid close contact with persons displaying possible symptoms of mpox
  • Vigorously observe handwashing/hand sanitation practices
  • Avoid direct contact with animals in affected areas
  • Consult with UMB’s Travel Medicine Practice and your primary care provider ahead of travel
