Nigeria: Building an International OEM Mutual Education Community

Marianne Cloeren, MD, MPH, Associate Professor, School of Medicine

Folashade Omokhodion, MBBS, PhD, FFOM, FFPH, FWACP, Professor, College of Medicine at University of Ibadan

The BIOME Community Project will deliver recurring virtual Global Grand Rounds in occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) topics, including the impact of climate change on work. Conducted in collaboration with the International Occupational Medicine Society Collaborative (IOMSC), the project will engage OEM residency programs worldwide to discuss important scientific topics and share international perspectives on the topics discussed. OEM residents, who will typically be from higher income countries with OEM training programs, will benefit from learning about the work contexts and hazards in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), while the physicians delivering care to workers in LMIC will benefit from access to educational offering not yet available to them. Dr. Cloeren and Dr. Omokhodion are working to establish and cultivate an OEM physician network in Africa, leveraging the location of the 2024 International Commission on Occupational Health annual conference in Morocco.

The objectives of this project are:

  • Provide residents with experience in planning and delivering education

  • Increase international connections among OEM programs

  • Learn from colleagues around the world

  • Expand access to quality OEM education especially in LMIC without access to such educational pathways
