NOV 21: Perspectives in Health, Law, and Human Services: "Indigenous Languages and Cultures in Our Practice"

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated 2019 as International Year of Indigenous Languages. The UMB Writing Center, Center for Global Education Initiatives, and Office of International Services have officially joined the worldwide programming by creating a space and time here at University of Maryland, Baltimore, for a discussion of decolonial perspectives and practices in health and human services education.

Join us for “Perspectives in Health, Law, and Human Services: Indigenous Languages and Cultures in Our Practice” on November 21 from 3:30-5:00pm in Elm Room B of the SMC Campus Center. Rebecca Nagel, Cherokee artist and activist will make keynote remarks on the Indian Child Welfare Act and its connections to current health and human services education and practice. Then, panelists Dr. Gabrielle Tayac, Piscataway Nation member and scholar; Dr. Bayley J. Marquez, new College Park Assistant Professor and Indigenous Scholar from the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians; and invited UMB faculty will join Nagle in a curated dialogue focused on how we as students, faculty, and practitioners can work with Indigenous communities to provide more equitable health, legal, and human services.
