Partnerships

UMB's Office of Community Engagement has strong ties to the West Baltimore neighborhoods adjacent to our campus. We work collaboratively with neighbors, community associations, Baltimore City Public Schools, and other community leaders on projects of mutual benefit to Baltimore residents and UMB's community partnership principles.

Partnerships with Baltimore City Public Schools

P-TECH School at Dunbar High School

The P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High) school is a six-year high school program, featuring integrated high school and college coursework, leading to an industry-recognized postsecondary degree in a health care field (physical therapy, nursing, health information technology, respiratory care) for all students. UMB partners with the P-TECH school to provide mentors and campus-based learning opportunities in health care for participating students.

UMB Speakers Bureau

UMB encourages faculty, staff, and student engagement in K-12 partner schools in its neighboring community. As the state of Maryland's only public academic health and law center, one way of easily engaging our campus community in the lives of the youth is by exposing local youth to careers in health care, law, and human service. To this end, the UMB Office of Community Engagement is creating a K-12 Career Speakers Bureau.

Cure Scholars

UMB CURE Scholars is a free health care pipeline program for students attending select West Baltimore K-12 partner schools that aims to promote student interest in health care careers and nurture their academic progress. The CURE Scholars program leverages campus volunteer mentors to provide after-school, Saturday, and summer academic enrichment programming for participants.

YouthWorks

The YouthWorks program provides summer employment opportunities on the UMB campus in partnership with the Mayor's Office of Employment Development. UMB operates two long-standing YouthWorks programs.

  • HireOne: Places high school students in administrative roles on the UMB campus for real-world workplace experience.
  • Summer Bioscience Internship Program: Places high school students interested in health care careers with faculty in a clinical or research setting for a period of four weeks annually to learn about careers in health care.

UMB Day

The Office of Community Engagement provides hands-on learning opportunities on the UMB campus, providing career exposure and health/nutrition programming to K-12 schools in the University's surrounding community. Campus visit "destinations" include the School of Nursing's Clinical Simulation Labs, the School of Law's Moot Courtroom, the School of Pharmacy's Practice Lab, a number of health care-related museums, and other campus-based educational outings.

Community Partnerships

Partnership with West Baltimore

UMB works in partnership with the University of Maryland Medical Center to leverage campus resources to benefit mutual community-partnered K-12 schools and community organizations. Recent Projects include 2017 Back to School Community Fair and school supply collection and Thanksgiving meal drive. To request volunteers for your event, please click here.

Southwest Partnership

The Southwest Partnership is a local nonprofit made up of seven neighborhoods and six anchor institutions in Baltimore, adjacent to UMB's campus. UMB actively supports the work of the Southwest Partnership and has a seat on its Board of Directors.

Volunteer Coordination

OCE leverages campus volunteers to meet needs identified by partner K-12 schools and community organizations. Local schools are encouraged to post volunteer opportunities on the OCE website for faculty, staff, and students interested in supporting various activities.

UMB Council for the Arts and Culture

OCE supports the UMB Council for the Arts and Culture's efforts in West Baltimore by managing the commissioning of public mural projects in partnership with UMB's K-12 partner schools. Projects to date include public murals at Southwest Baltimore Charter School and James McHenry Elementary/Middle School. Additionally, OCE helps to promote Council of the Arts & Culture-sponsored events in the community.

Internal Partnerships

UMB Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL)

The University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Athletic/Activities League (UMBPAL) is a mentoring program for second- through eighth-grade students from West Baltimore. It is a partnership between the UMB Police Department and the Office of Community Engagement’s Community Engagement Center.
