Faiza Hasan is about to graduate from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, where she has played an active role in numerous campuswide events.

She organized “Immigration Issues in the 2016 Election: Be Informed and Vote” in October, which featured a panel that included Sen. Benjamin Cardin and six other experts who addressed many of the key immigration concerns raised by the election cycle. The event attracted more than 100 people.

Nine months earlier, Hasan, a Virginia native whose parents emigrated from Pakistan, organized “Combating Islamophobia — Constitutional Issues Affecting Muslim Americans and Asian Americans in a Post-9/11 ‌World.” This featured another stellar panel of community leaders who discussed the topic with over 135 people in attendance.

In addition, Hasan is co-president of the Women’s Bar Association and serves as a tireless advocate for the rights of women law students and legal issues relating to women in general, including human trafficking and domestic violence.

“I nominated myself as student remarker because I believe that our nation stands at a pivotal time in history,” Hasan says. “My colleagues and classmates need to know that we must stand together in times when it seems our nation’s divide is high. UMB has taught us to be inclusive of our fellow students and we should carry that same commitment to diversity into our workplaces.

“I am a female Muslim born to immigrant parents from Pakistan. I understand diversity, and I understand that we need to embrace diversity and look for opportunities to help one another instead of putting each other down. The beauty of America is that we are the melting pot of different races, cultures, and religions. We must fight to continue that trend.”

In addition to organizing numerous on-campus activities, Hasan, who was raised in Maryland, has maintained a stellar GPA, and won numerous awards and scholarships.

They include:

Hasan has served internships with the likes of Disability Rights Maryland (August 2016-January 2017), DLA Piper (May 2015-August 2015), the U.S. Attorney’s Office (January 2016–May 2016), the U.S. Department of Education (January 2013-June 2013), the Governor’s Office (June 2012-August 2012), and the Washington, D.C., office of Latham & Watkins (May 2016-July 2016), where she will be working full time after graduation.

Hasan is fluent in Urdu and Hindi.

“I have loved my time at the Carey School of Law and at the University of Maryland, Baltimore,” she says. “No matter what, I will continue to give back to a school that has given so much to me.”
