Physical therapists work with individuals from all walks of life to prevent, diagnose, and treat movement dysfunction through education and the application of sound evidence to practice. Leslie B. Glickman, PT, PhD, retired faculty member from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science (PTRS) in the School of Medicine (SOM), has spent the past half-century taking that pursuit to new heights as a clinician, rehab manager, administrator, educator, researcher, and field worker, regionally and internationally.

Having earned her Certificate of Proficiency in Physical Therapy from SOM in one of the first graduating classes, Glickman launched a wide-ranging physical therapy career. Her tenure at PTRS spanned more than 15 years, as a full-time and associate faculty.

During her time at PTRS, Glickman served as director of the Post-Professional Programs, interim director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (DPT), chair of several PTRS committees, and actively contributed to department, SOM, and University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) committees and projects.

Bringing her clinical management experience and educational credentials to UMB, her emphasis was on teaching managerial skills in the Post-Professional and DPT programs. She is most proud of developing the DScPT program, one of the first post-professional programs in the country and mentoring more than half of the 110 students who completed the program during its 12-year history.

Glickman may brush off her accomplishments but her peers feel differently. In 2013, she won the Henry O. and Florence P. Kendall Award from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) of Maryland for her contributions to the profession. She served the APTA of Maryland in its formative years, held several offices and committee chairmanships, and was president from 2011 to 2013.

Her collaborative nature led Glickman to her “passion” — international education, consultation, and research in less-resourced communities. Various organizations have supported her international projects, including the Fulbright Scholars Program (U.S. Department of State), Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO), and UMB Centers for Global Education Initiatives and Interprofessional Education.

In addition to guest speaking, she has contributed to several publications as author and manuscript reviewer, poster and program presenter at regional and international conferences, and served on philanthropic, social action, and educational committees.

Locally, she regularly volunteers with and actively supports the American Physical Therapy Association of Maryland, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, Baltimore Women’s Giving Circle, and Southwest Charter School. She is pleased that part of her outreach to Southwest students included a session about physical therapy mobility devices and the profession.
