This site provides a “personality” (or preference) assessment that returns a 4-letter code similar to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Users will answer questions and be provided with detailed free information about their type with the option to explore all 16 types. There is a strong “Our Theory” page that describes how the assessment was created and where to go for additional information.

Assessmant.com (MAPP)

The MAPP is an interest survey designed by the International Assessment Network in Minneapolis, MN. A free sample MAPP Career Analysis is provided to help individuals identify their preferences for working with people or things, and other job characteristics; it also suggests some occupations that match these preferences. The resulting report is sent to the user via e-mail, outlining his or her “natural motivations and talent for work” and matching these to five occupational descriptions from O*NET.

CareerOneStop Self Assessment Pages

This site has free online self-assessments for interests, skills, and work values. Users who take the assessments can print and/or save their results and compare with occupational information.

The O*Net Interest Profiler is an assessment of client interests based on Holland’s theory (RIASEC). Careers.ORG

Careers.Org is a source for employment, job search and career education information across the world. It includes detailed information about over 1000 occupations, including wages, skills, and links to corresponding college programs and career, job and educational resources for states, cities, and counties in the United States, as well as Canadian Provinces and international countries.

Gladeo.org

Gladeo is an inclusive, next-generation career navigation platform for the future of work. It aims to build a more inclusive, equitable and prepared workforce of the future by providing high-quality, culturally-responsive career guidance to anyone, anywhere.  The Gladeo platform uses videos, storytelling, an extensive digital library of informational interviews, as well as data-driven, personalized education and resource recommendations to facilitate the dissemination of knowledge that is crucial for successful career development.

O*NET Online

This site contains both summary and detailed information on occupations in the US economy as well as the ability to search for information by various criteria such as job family, industry, skills, knowledge, interests, green jobs, bright outlook occupations, and several others. It is produced by the federal government, is updated frequently, and contains state and national wage information, occupational projections, related occupations and opportunities for more information from professional and trade associations. It is considered to be the basic occupational information for various other websites and career guidance systems.

Occupational Outlook Handbook

This is the “go to site” for comprehensive information on occupations and their requirements. Occupational information can be search by several criteria such as wages, education level, training, and job growth. It is updated and produced every two years by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the official agency responsible for collecting and analyzing occupational information.

Percipio by Skillsoft is a one-stop shop for professional learning provided by UMB Human Resource Services. With Percipio, we have a single eLearning platform to grow talent development and performance. There are multiple resources that cover all aspects of professional life, from improving computer proficiency to enhancing leadership skills.

Alison

The site offers more than 750 courses in such areas as personal development and soft skills, business and enterprise, digital literacy and financial and economic literacy. There is even a course to assist in selecting a career path.

America’s Job Centers

A center in your location may be able to provide career related training. Search by zip code and distance to find the center nearest you.

EdX

EdX is an online learning destination and MOOC provider, offering high-quality courses from the world’s best universities and institutions to learners globally. Nearly 1000 courses are available so include many specifically related to career development.

GCF Learn Free

From the makers of Microsoft tutorials, you can access almost 200 online, self-paced tutorials in math, career, reading, everyday life. You don’t need to register to access the courses, but if you do register, the site will keep a record of your learning for you. Tutorials on job search, career planning, and workplace skills may be most useful.

Kahn Academy

This site contains hundreds of self-paced courses primarily in math, but also in economics, science and engineering, coding, college admissions, and test preparation.

Literacy Information and Communication System

Through the LINCS find self-paced online courses, and searchable resources you can find training in such areas as adult basic education, family literacy, adult secondary education, computer literacy, and others.

MIT Open Courseware

This site makes available virtually all MIT course content. It is open and available to the world and is a permanent MIT activity.

You can find business related courses and webinars to help start and maintain a business.

Udemy

On this site your will find many short courses in the areas of business, careers, technology, academics, marketing, lifestyle, health, etc. Type in a course topic in the search window and sort by price (free) to find what is available. Overall, the site claims to have 42,000 courses.

Business Finder

Use the Business Finder to locate businesses that may be hiring in your field by entering a business name, industry, or occupation, and a location.

Glassdoor

Employees and former employees anonymously review companies, give pros and cons, share information about the interview and job search process and report which companies employees rate the highest. The Company Reviews tab will bring you to a section where you can search for employers and see what employees think about working there and find typical salaries.

Google Maps propinquity search

Navigate to a location on Google Maps. Use the "Search Nearby" feature to look for a type of company.

LinkedIn

Though LinkedIn has many functions, to find companies enter the company name in the search window, find a university to see where their graduates work. Another great way to find companies is to look at the “People also viewed” feature while on a company page. You can also see the people who have or do work there and network with them.

Meetup

Meetup is a site for people with all kinds of interests to find each other. Many groups are focused around particular industries and are attended by employees or hosted by employers. Joining the right Meetsups can provide the opportunity to meet people in the same field and contact prospective employers.

The Muse

You can explore the inside of top companies, and meet the people that work there. This can give you an idea of the workplace setting and the company culture.

The Public Register

You can order printed or online versions of annual reports (for free). For selected companies you can obtain corporate and financial information.

Vault

Search by company name, industry, location and size to learn the basic information about a company such as basic statistics, locations, competitors, name of the CEO, etc. The site provides an opportunity to read and/or submit a review.

This site describes itself as a “one-stop source for the latest career tools, job search tips, and expert advice” for individuals at any stage in their career.

This site is surprisingly good considering it is managed by 1 person, it seems. There are plenty of videos, blogs, and slides that career services folks can use. The resources seem to be free and there is only a single e-book for sale with one more in the making. The e-books are not pushed hard; the resources are.

ThriveYard

This is a career advice website that provides in-depth/comprehensive career articles to help jobseekers find jobs and jobholders grow and succeed in their careers. Blogs, videos and other resources are available.

Career Jet

CareerJet is an employment search engine that provides a selection of job offerings by referencing listings from job boards and recruitment agencies and sites. CareerJet posts worldwide opportunities including listings from North America, Europe, Central America, South America, Africa, Asia, Caribbean, and the Middle East.

CareerBuilder

CareerBuilder is a job search community that allows a job seeker to store a resume online without posting it in the database. It offers the option to sign up for job alerts and provides online job search tips. Registered users can create up to five personal search profiles to track new jobs added to the database, and an e-mail message can be generated to a user when a match is discovered.

CareerOneStop

CareerOneStop is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor and a partner of the American Job Center network. This site offers a variety of resources for career exploration, training, and jobs. Specifically, the site links job seekers to state job banks, employment agencies, military options, and job fairs.

Coolworks: Jobs in Great Places

Many employers listed on CoolWorks are hospitality and guest service industry oriented – and what is considered to be “Jobs in Great Places.” There are also heaps of great outdoor adventure outfits, educational jobs, as well as conservation and environmental jobs and some internships.

Dice

Dice is the leading job site specifically for tech careers. The site allows users to search extremely specialized tech positions, opening the door to finding more niche tech jobs. Dice offers a unique feature to search for positions that are remote or require telecommuting, along with part-time, full-time, contract, and third-party postings.

Federal Internships, The Washington DC Job Source

This website page provides links to internship opportunities available in each agency or department of the Federal Government with links to all members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate who offer internships in their DC or home offices. Glassdoor acclaims itself as one of the fastest growing job listing and recruiting websites in the Internet. The site allows users to search millions of job postings, research salaries, research interview questions, and connect to company reviews all in one place.

Idealist

Idealist is a website committed to connecting individuals who “want to do good” with opportunities that allow them to collaborate and take action. Users will find jobs, volunteer, internship, and other service opportunities/events to attend by using the search function on this site.

Indeed

Indeed is a well-known job search engine that aggregates listings from online job boards, newspapers, associations, and company career pages for job and internship listings. Users can search job listings by state, industry field, salary, experience level, job type, and location. Indeed accepts paid job listings directly from employers in addition to collecting online postings in one location. Create a free account for daily and weekly alerts with notifications going to your inbox.

After registering on the site, you can search for various internships for college and high school students. The site includes some tips for a successful internship and for turning the internship into a job.

 The site provides an internship search engine and regular blog focused on students and recent graduates.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is an online social networking site and also offers access to job postings by location, company, industry, experience level, and more. LinkedIn allows users to discover potential job opportunities based on profile preferences for free. If users want to stand out or access direct messaging to recruiters, they may pay an additional fee. LinkedIn's job postings are high quality and the social platform allows users to connect and network with contacts from organizations they find desirable.

LinkUp

LinkUp is a job search engine that searches jobs on company sites. The job postings are from small, mid-sized, and large company career sections. LinkUp claims to be the only job search engine that indexes jobs exclusively from company websites. Updated daily, the 3+ million jobs in the search engine are always current with no duplicates or job pollution.

Monster

Monster.com is one of the most recognized names in the online job search community. It offers a variety of job and career resources for everyone from college students to contractors to chief executives. It also offers several industry/job field communities, including healthcare, human resources, and finance and plenty of job search extras: networking boards, job search alerts, and online resume posting.

OneDayOneJob

This website features thousands of companies and tens of thousands of entry level and intern positions. The user can browse by location or field of endeavor.

Public Service Careers

This site includes resources for public service careers including salary trends and information on graduate degrees. Also includes a job board and a database featuring profiles of public service leaders with details about their career paths

SimplyHired

This is a job search engine that searches major job boards, company pages, online classifieds, and other data sources for job and internship listings. Job seekers can search by keyword, job title, geographic region, distance, and date the listing is added. The site suggests companies users might like based on previous searches and lists the most popular industries, companies, and job types by city.

USAJOBS

USAJobs is the federal government’s official job site with opportunities posted in mathematics, engineering, human resources, business, finance, social science, technology, science, and public health. Academia.edu is a social platform and knowledge-sharing site for individuals in academic and research arenas. Users can create profiles and post/share their papers with other academics to network and get feedback.  Facebook 

Facebook can be used for branding, creating and engaging in groups, and communicating information about organizations and employment opportunities. Users can follow organizations of interest to learn about opportunities and become familiar with important current events and organizational culture information.  LinkedIN 

LinkedIn allows users to create a profile that acts as an online resume with options to describe experiences, skills, qualities, and showcase work samples. Users can follow organization pages, connect with professional networking contacts, search for jobs (there is a student job database in addition to the primary job database), find university alumni, join groups to participate in discussions, read articles authored by industry professionals, and more.

 Twitter

Twitter can be used to learn about organizations, explore employment opportunities, and network.Users can post short lines of text (“tweets”) that may contain messaging about their personal brand, link to helpful resources (videos, websites, articles, blogs) consistent with their career interests and goals, and communicate with others. Users can follow organizations or individuals to have the tweets of others automatically come up in their personal newsfeed or in notifications. Employers may post links to jobs which may give users quick access to opportunities.

These videos show the types of work people do in nearly 550 careers, organized by the 16 career clusters recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Charting the Course: Supporting the Career Development of Youth with Disabilities

This Guide brings together effective techniques from both educational and workforce systems in an effort to foster a different way of thinking to support young people. It is intended to help practitioners, administrators, and policymakers in secondary and postsecondary education programs, transition programs, One-Stop Career Centers, youth employment programs, and community rehabilitation programs to improve services and outcomes for youth, ages 14 to 25, with diagnosed and undiagnosed learning disabilities.

Colleges with Programs for Students With Learning Disabilities

Almost all colleges and universities provide some level of services and/or accommodations for learning disabled students, as mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The colleges and universities listed go a step further…they offer programs, some quite comprehensive, designed to support students with learning disabilities.

This website provides education and technology related information to empower education attainment and employment for persons with a disability. Resources are focused for both the person with a disability and the person/people supporting or potentially employing that person.

Job Accommodation Network (JAN)

This website can be used by job seekers, employees, and employers to learn more about accommodations in the workplace. Sections include A – Z of Disabilities, an Accommodations search and general resources. There is also an Accommodation and Compliance series which not only provides facts about disabilities but also accommodation ideas for the workplace and example scenarios. Leadership for the Employment of Americans with Disabilities (LEAD)

This website is produced by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Documents explaining Schedule A are available for applicants with disabilities, hiring managers, and human resources professionals.

Lime Connect

Students with disabilities are able to create a free account on the Lime Connect website. This not for profit organization links students with disabilities to scholarships, internships, and full time employment with their global corporate partners. Educators are able to sign up for a free Friends of Lime Connect account, where they will receive updates from Lime Connect as well as webinars focusing on career development for individuals with disabilities.

Office of Disability Employment Policy

This website, produced by the U.S. Department of Labor, provides information on more than 45 topics related to the job search process for individuals with disabilities. Topics range from accessible technology to preparing youth with disabilities for their career development. Policy updates, events, and additional resources are also available.

Skills to Pay the Bills Video Series

A collection of short videos created by the U.S. Department of Labor highlighting the importance of soft skills in the workplace. Topics covered include enthusiasm and attitude, teamwork, professionalism and networking.

The Center for Universal Design in Education

This site provides in-depth information, specific to educators, about Universal Design. It includes the process, principles and applications. Universal Design checklists are provided for a multitude of areas such as instruction, distance learning, and student services. Individual guides are available for career services, advising, and website accessibility.

Workforce Recruitment Program

This website provides information on the Workforce Recruitment Program, a national recruiting program that seeks out college students with disabilities for summer and full-time employment with federal sector employers.  Incarcerated and Ex-Offenders

Most people who are incarcerated have no or very limited to any internet access. The listed sites were selected for professionals who may be working with adults and youth who correctly are still incarcerated or recently released. Many print publications are available in book and online form for those without internet access.

CareerOneStop’s Job Search Help for Ex-Offenders

This site is part of DOL’s CareerOneStop site and has a unique section for anyone with a criminal record. It includes tips, information and resources to help search for, apply for, and begin a new job. Education & Career Guide for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals

Formerly incarcerated individuals face unique challenges in their education and employment. This guide is designed to help those people overcome these obstacles and provides resources to help them seek education or find a career.

Federal Bonding Program

The U.S. Department of Labor established The Federal Bonding Program in 1966 to provide Fidelity Bonds that guarantee honesty for “at-risk,” hard-to-place job seekers. The bonds cover the first six months of employment. There is no cost to the job applicant or the employer. This site describes the process to access federal bonds and state-based contacts for individuals who have been incarcerated.

Kansas Reentry Guide

This site shares an example of a state based client guide to reentry based on best practices in career and reentry planning. Other states could adapt a similar resource for their adults and youth in their state applying local resource contacts. There are links to several potentially useful resources.

National Institute of Correction and Library of Resources

This resource-rich site offers information about staff training programs related to career and workforce development, best practices in offender reentry programs and services. NIC also offers a series of eLearning courses on a range of career development topics.

Reentry Employment Opportunities

This DOL site offers practitioners new ideas and tools to work with former offenders. Skills to Pay the Bills: Mastering Soft Skills for Workplace Success

This site outlines a curriculum developed by the DOL/ODEP (Office of Disability Employment Policy) focused on teaching "soft" or workforce readiness skills to youth, including youth with disabilities. Created for youth development professionals as an introduction to workplace interpersonal and professional skills, the curriculum is targeted for youth ages 14 to 21 in both in-school and out-of-school environments. The basic structure of the program is comprised of modular, hands-on, engaging activities that focus on six key skill areas: communication, enthusiasm and attitude, teamwork, networking, problem solving and critical thinking, and professionalism.

Corporate Equality Index (Human Right’s Campaign)

The Human Rights Campaign is also the publisher of the Corporate Equality Index. This index "provides a simple way to evaluate whether America's biggest employers are treating their gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees and consumers equitably." The index is based on a 10-point system that rates corporate policies and actions toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. 

Human Right’s Campaign

The website is a a source of information on workplace and corporate attitudes and policies surrounding sexual orientation.  Includes links to information about employee groups, organizations and companies offering domestic partnership benefits, and legal and discrimination policies. It also a bibliography of career related issues.

Lamda Legal

Lamda Legal is a national LGBT civil rights organization. The web site includes information about workplace discrimination cases of potential interest to your students and clients.

Career OneStop Veteran and Military Transition Center

One-stop website providing resources to help with employment, training and financial help after military service. Functions as a high-level portal for very basic information on job-search, post-service education, veteran benefits and local/community resources.

G.I. Jobs

Designed for transitioning service members, G.I. Jobs features articles, tips and online tools to help transitioning military explore different career and post-secondary education options. Publishes a monthly print and digital magazine.

Hire Heroes USA

Hire Heroes offers service members, veterans and their spouses transition workshops, career coaching and employment preparation counseling. In addition to free resume and coaching services the website features resources including a list of vocational training programs, workshop dates and locations and job board.

My Next Move for Veterans

Interactive tool designed to help veterans who are current job seekers learn about their career options. The site has tasks, skills, salary information, job listings, and more for over 900 different careers. Veterans can find careers through keyword search; by browsing industries that employ different types of workers; or by discovering civilian careers that are similar to their job in the military. Veterans can also take advantage of the O*NET Interest Profiler, a tool that offers personalized career suggestions based on a person's interests and level of work experience.

My Perfect Resume

This page of this website is dedicated to sites, services, and resources that support current and former military personnel and their families. Along with job search advice and resources it also lists information for employers who want to hire veterans, information on pay rates and employment verification, and employment and financial rights for reservists called to active duty.

O*Net Military Crosswalk

This website translates military career fields from all service branches into an equivalent civilian occupation. It provides details on potential job titles/roles as well as the skills required for comparable civilian employment.

Syracuse University Institute for Veterans and Military Families

The IVMF delivers unique and innovative programs in career, vocations, and entrepreneurship education and training to post 9/11 veterans and active duty military spouses, as well as tailored programs to all veterans. Programs include Entrepreneurship Bootcamp, Boots to Business seminars, Onward to Opportunity and the Veteran Career Transition Program. The site also features local community outreach efforts servicing veterans and current policy research in the field of veteran transition and employment.

United States Department of Labor VETS

Provides a variety of resources for veterans and family members including: curriculum and training materials from the official Transition Assistance Program (TAP), apprenticeship occupations and career listings, information on employment rights, resources for homeless veterans and female veterans and links to local American Job Centers.

Corporation for Nation and Community Service

This organization is the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. This site allows a person to search by location and several subject areas including animals, arts and culture, children and youth, civic and community, health, hurricane relief, public safety, technology, seniors, veterans and military families, and several others.

American Association of University Women: Career and Workplace

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is a voice promoting equity and education for women and girls. Additional resources and information related to the carrier opportunities in cyber security, the newsroom and topical issues such as negotiating a salary raise, and being a good Mentee/Mentor are highlighted among other issues.

Code Like a Girl (CLAG)

This site provides information on career exploration and job search strategies that reflect the whole person and as women. CLAG Girls offers suggestions of career exploration and exposure to careers can take the fear out of exploring careers girls may have never considered.

College Success for Women in STEM

This site lists scholarships, programs and organizations helping women bridge the STEM gender gap. Scholarship and internship information is available for each of the aspects of STEM careers. Institute for Women in the Trades, Technology and Science

IWITTS helps educators nationwide close the gender gap for women and girls in male-dominated careers, such as technology, the trades and law enforcement. Visit the resources page for free resources.

National Girls Collaborative Project

This site promotes gender equity in math, science, engineering and technology. There are many activities that educators and counselors can use with younger women exploring STEM career pathways at all skill levels. Visit the publications link to access some free resources.

Stem Women

This site highlights many women in STEM careers. US Department of Labor Women’s Bureau

The Women's Bureau develops policies and standards and conducts inquiries to safeguard the interests of working women. This site provides information about a broad range of options for working from home. California CareerZone

This is a career exploration and planning system designed especially for students in California and New York; it can be used by others. The Make Money Choices section is an introduction to the concept of how much money is needed for life after high school.

CareerShip

CareerShip® is an online career exploration adventure for middle and high school students. It is a product of Mapping Your Future, a public-service web site providing free career, college, financial aid, and money management information and services.

GetMyFuture

This website has information, tools, and links to resources to help anyone age 16 to 24 make a training plan. Information in Spanish is also available. The site is based on actions such as find a career I like, finish high school, get work experience, write a resume, get a job, get training, etc.

Junior Achievement

JA brings volunteers from the community into the classroom to deliver proven, hands-on programming on financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship that can inspire students to understand the opportunities provided by education.

Kids.gov

Kids.gov was the official kids' portal for the U.S. government. While it linked kids, parents and teachers to information and services on the web from government agencies, schools, and educational organizations, the page was merged into the usa.gov site. The career videos are still there.

March 2 Success

March 2 Success is a free website sponsored by the U.S. Army and provides access to online study materials to help improve scores on standardized tests such as state exit exams, college entrance exams including the SAT and ACT, military entrance exam (ASVAB) and others. The program is free and completely confidential. Users will not be contacted by Army recruiters unless that contact is specifically requested.

Virginia View Career Town

Includes career and occupation related games for elementary school students with resources for parents and professional.

What Can I Do With a Major In...?

This site links college majors to occupations. It also include a video library, salary calculator and information on the major industries in the US economy.

YouthRules! Preparing the 21st Century Workforce

YouthRules! is an initiative to increase public awareness of Federal and State rules concerning young workers. Through the YouthRules! initiative, the U.S. Department of Labor and its partners seek to promote positive and safe work experiences that help prepare young workers in the 21st Century workforce. Content on the site includes know the rules, find support, news and resources, and teen work stories.
