Academic Community Engagement Awards

The Interprofessional Program for Academic Community Engagement (IPACE) in collaboration with the Office of Community and Civic Engagement (OCCE) is sponsoring awards to recognize the contributions made by individuals who support community and civic engaged efforts at UMB and in the surrounding West Baltimore community. The award presentation is an ongoing effort to shine light on the talented and dedicated University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) faculty, staff, students, and community members. Refer to the eligibility and descriptions below for each award category.


Outstanding Achievement in Academic Community Engagement by a Faculty Member 

Demonstrated integration of civic and community engagement in one’s teaching, research, and/or service as appropriate to one’s context and roles (this might include, but is not limited to, teaching undergraduate or graduate service-learning courses, conducting community-based participatory research, developing departmental or institutional engagement programs and curricula, and/or studying the impact of public engagement).

Demonstrated commitment and capacity to develop and sustain reciprocal community partnerships and to contribute to positive change on issues of public concern (examples include ongoing work with community members to design, implement, and improve engagement initiatives, recognition of partners as co-educators, evaluation results that show benefits for communities as well as students, support for multifaceted partnerships focused on particular public issues, and research-based collaborations).

Demonstrated leadership in developing cultures, programs, and/or policies that promote meaningful engagement on one’s campus, within higher education, or in one’s discipline (through, for example, efforts aimed at redesigning curriculum, enhancing faculty development, recognizing engagement in faculty hiring, tenure, and promotion, or fostering common vision and collaboration across units or institutions).

Eligibility

  • Must be a current member of UMB Faculty
  • Must not have received the same award in the previous two years

Outstanding Achievement in Academic Community Engagement by a Staff Member 

Demonstrated integration of civic and community engagement in one’s operations, activities, and/or service as appropriate to one’s context and roles (this might include, but is not limited to, policymaking, communications, developing departmental or institutional engagement programs, budgeting and/or evaluating the impact of public engagement).

Demonstrated commitment and capacity to develop and sustain reciprocal community partnerships and to contribute to positive change on issues of public concern (examples include ongoing work with community members to design, implement, and improve engagement initiatives, recognition of partners as co-educators, evaluation results that show benefits for communities as well as students, support for multifaceted partnerships focused on particular public issues, and research-based collaborations).

Demonstrated leadership in developing cultures, programs, and/or policies that promote meaningful engagement on one’s campus, within higher education, or in one’s discipline (through, for example, efforts aimed at redesigning curriculum, enhancing faculty development, recognizing engagement in faculty hiring, tenure, and promotion, or fostering common vision and collaboration across units or institutions).

  • Must not have received the same award in the previous two years

Outstanding Achievement in Academic Community Engagement by a Student 

Demonstrated integration of civic and community engagement in one’s studies, research, and/or service as appropriate to one’s context and roles (this might include, but is not limited to, participation in undergraduate or graduate service-learning courses, conducting or supporting community-based participatory research, participating in or developing student organizations or student engagement programs, and/or studying the impact of public engagement).

Demonstrated commitment and capacity to develop and sustain reciprocal community partnerships and to contribute to positive change on issues of public concern (examples include ongoing work with community members to design, implement, and improve engagement initiatives, recognition of partners as experts, evaluation results that show benefits for communities as well as UMB affiliates, support for multifaceted partnerships focused on particular public issues, and research-based collaborations).

Demonstrated leadership in developing cultures, programs, and/or activities that promote meaningful engagement on the UMB campus, within higher education, or in one’s discipline (through, for example, efforts aimed at redesigning events to be more accessible to community members, enhancing communication materials to be more culturally responsive or linguistically accessible, or fostering common vision and collaboration across units, organizations, or institutions).

Eligibility

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at UMB
  • Must not have received the same award in the previous two years

Outstanding Achievement in Academic Community Engagement by a Community Member 

Commitment to Addressing Community Needs: the community partner excels at inspiring and involving others to become engaged in service while comprehensively teaching them about issues in the community.

Collaborative and Reciprocal Relationship with Campus: the community partner engages in mutually beneficial relationships with UMB through collaborative work that addresses identified community needs and exceeds educational objectives.

A Bridge for Others to Learn: the nominee teaches their partners about their organization, culture, system and the importance of service while launching volunteers into a lifestyle of civic engagement.

Eligibility

  • Must be a resident of Baltimore, MD (if nominated as an individual)
  • Must be registered as an organization in Maryland  (if nominated as an organization)
  • Partner must be able to demonstrate currently active community engagement with Baltimore communities
  • Must not have received the same award in the previous two years
