Guidance Regarding Travel for Non-Citizens

March 26, 2025

Dear UMB Faculty and Human Resources Payroll Representatives,

The Office of International Services (OIS) is closely monitoring developments related to U.S. travel and immigration procedures that might affect non-U.S. citizens and possibly have impacts on international students, scholars, and visitors affiliated with the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB).

OIS staff are in ongoing communication with current international students and scholars on UMB-sponsored visas with information about travel procedures. We also are available to provide individualized support based on specific visa categories and travel circumstances.

If you are planning to invite international colleagues to campus on visas that are not sponsored by the University — particularly those traveling on business visitor/tourist visas, the business visitor/tourist visa waiver program, or citizens of countries that are exempt from visa requirements (i.e., Canada and Bermuda) — we recommend the following:

  • Avoid offering immigration or travel advice unless you have consulted with OIS
  • Refer questions about appropriate visa processing times or supporting documentation (e.g., invitation letters) to our office
  • Contact OIS early in the planning process so we can advise on the best visa pathway for the nature and length of the visit

Further, given the potential for changes in policy and travel protocols, it’s important to ensure that international visitors are well-prepared and carry the proper documentation for entry into the United States.

We appreciate your partnership as we work to provide a welcoming experience for our international community. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to OIS with any questions or for additional support.

Warm Regards,

Amy Ramirez, MA

Executive Director of Global Learning and International Services
