The University of Maryland, Baltimore's (UMB) CURE Scholars Program recently celebrated the graduation of its second cohort of scholars.
This groundbreaking program seeks to empower middle and high school students in West Baltimore by providing them with competitive and rewarding research, health care, and STEM-related career opportunities. The program is designed to excite students about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on activities that enhance their curriculum. It also helps families by assisting them with social resources and creating a positive home learning environment.
The UMB CURE Scholars Program has had a tremendous impact on its participants. The first cohort of scholars graduated from the program in May 2022 with a newfound appreciation for STEM fields and the confidence to pursue their dreams. The second cohort was no different; they also left the program feeling empowered to take on the world.
“I am so proud to have been a part of this program that has provided me with so many opportunities for growth,” said graduating scholar Shereen Farguharson. “It has opened up my eyes to what I can do with my future, and I am excited to see where I will go next.”
The graduates are now equipped with the skills needed to succeed in college and beyond. They have gained valuable experience through internships at local hospitals and research labs, as well as access to mentors who have helped them develop leadership skills. These experiences have opened up new possibilities for these young people, giving them an opportunity to make a real difference in their communities while pursuing their passions in STEM fields.
The CURE Scholars Program is an inspiring example of how education can be used to create positive change in our society. By providing students with access to meaningful learning experiences, it has given them the tools they need to become successful leaders in their respective fields. We congratulate all of our graduates on this accomplishment!
