2024 Clery Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

Oct. 1, 2024

Dear UMB Community:

I am pleased to present you with the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) 2024 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report Our commitment to transparency and accountability begins here with this annual report, which includes crime data, crime and sexual misconduct prevention resources, fire safety information, training information, safety tips, and much more.

I am proud to say that crime remains low at UMB and our campus remains one of the safest places in downtown Baltimore to learn, work, and visit. We attribute much of this success to our department’s community engagement efforts and data-driven policing strategies.

Still, crime does occur. In 2023, we noticed a marked increase in motor vehicle thefts, which include electric scooter thefts and attempted vehicle thefts. This mirrors a national upward trend in motor vehicle thefts. In 2023, Maryland’s motor vehicle thefts rose by 63 percent, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

As you look closer at the report, you’ll see that nearly all motor vehicle thefts occurred on public property, so we urge you to consider parking in UMB garages as a great way to keep yourself and your property safe.

We are committed to the safety of every student, employee, and visitor who comes to UMB, and I hope that you’ll take the time to learn more about the Clery Report and public safety at the University. More information about UMB Police and Public Safety can be found at umaryland.edu/police.

Finally, I want to extend my thanks to the UMB Office of Communications and Public Affairs for its support in designing, editing, and producing this report.

Sincerely,

Thomas Leone, MSL
Assistant Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police
