Dear UMB Community:
 
One of the things I love most about the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) is our ability to connect with our community. Our Community Outreach and Support Team (COAST) provides resources to vulnerable populations, mentoring to youth, and healing through our comfort K9, Poe!
 
Community outreach is part of what makes UMBPD so special. We’ve been recognized for this work with state, national, and even international awards. If you don’t know about our community outreach programs, I hope you’ll take a moment to learn more. 
 
On Tuesday, Aug. 2, we hope you’ll join us for National Night Out. Several community groups will join us, including SONS of Phoenix, the Downtown Partnership, HeartSmiles, and more. Plus, we’ll have free food, a video game truck, giveaways, and more. I hope to see you there!

Safety Tip of the Month
When the weather is nice, riding your bike is a fun and sustainable way to get to work (you may have even seen the UMB Office of Emergency Management’s Laura Cathcart featured in the ECOmmuters Series on The Elm!). 
 
If you bring your bike to campus, be sure to lock it up! Check that your lock is secured before leaving the area. Do not leave any items with your bike, such as saddle bags. Bike racks are located across campus, or, better yet, park in the Pratt Street Bike Cage! Learn more about bike parking facilities.
 
National Night Out
Join UMBPD on Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the corner of West Baltimore Street and South Poppleton Street for an evening of free food, fellowship, and fun! This annual event builds positive relationships between police departments and the communities we serve. Learn more about National Night Out.
 
Welcome New UMBPD Leadership
Please join us in welcoming assistant chief William Folden and director Vanessa Harrington to the UMBPD family! Folden, who has 28 years of law enforcement experience and volunteers as a youth and basketball coach, will serve as assistant chief of professional standards. Harrington has served in several roles at UMB, including deputy Title IX coordinator/equity and access compliance investigator in the Office of Accountability and Compliance; she will serve as director of security and compliance. Welcome!

We will be hosting either morning “Pastries with the Chief” or afternoon “Pizza with the Chief” this fall at all seven UMB schools as well as the University of Baltimore. Keep an eye on our social media (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) and your building’s digital screens for more information.
Active Assailant Door Locks
You may have noticed new door locks and informational stickers popping up across campus. These locks were a top recommendation by the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission to ensure that all doors could be locked from inside. Learn more about these door locks.
 
Active Assailant Preparedness
Committed to creating an informed and resilient community, UMB has developed several training opportunities and resources to ensure that our students, faculty, staff, and visitors are prepared in the unlikely event of an active assailant. Learn more about UMB Alerts, Stop the Bleed training, CRASE training, and more. 
 
Volunteer to Be an Emergency Warden!
Emergency wardens ensure that building occupants safely evacuate or are accounted for during fire alarm activations and building evacuations. All floors are required to have at least two wardens. Learn more about the program and volunteer here.
 
Laboratory Door Signs: Update Emergency Information
Maintaining accurate laboratory door signs is an essential part of protecting worker safety and health. In accordance with UMB’s Maintaining Laboratory Door Signs and Labels policy, all entryways to labs and/or chemical storage areas must display signage that indicates hazards, a principal investigator (PI), and at least one alternate emergency contact. For safety purposes, PIs cannot act as their own emergency contact; contact and emergency numbers are different, and emergency numbers must be non-campus numbers. Use your UMB credentials to request updated signage from MyEHS for free. EHS will deliver and post the signage. Call EHS at 410-706-7055 with any questions/concerns.
