Dear UMB Community:
 
Giving back to the community is vitally important to me. This value is woven into the very fabric of our community-oriented police department. I spent decades coaching community football and basketball. I’ve joined University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) employees on our time off to pick up trash along the Eutaw Street corridor. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve participated in the Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge benefiting Special Olympics Maryland. 
 
This Friday, for the first time ever, I will be participating in the Polar Bear Plunge as a Super Plunger. That means every hour for 24 hours, I’ll be running into the Chesapeake Bay. It’s another way I can give back to an important cause.
 
If you want to help support me, please donate to my Polar Plunge page. Every Super Plunger has to raise $10,000, and I am almost there. Every dollar counts. Please share with friends and family.

Safety Tip of the Month
UMB ID/One Cards ensure that only approved people have access to UMB buildings. Don’t let a stranger “tailgate” in behind you! While it’s courteous, holding a secure door open for someone you don’t know could lead to thefts or other security concerns.
 
It might seem rude, but for the safety of our UMB community, don’t hold secure doors open for others coming in behind you. UMB students, faculty, and staff should always have their ID visible when in UMB buildings, and visitors should have a visitor pass. Do your part to keep our community safe!

Last Call: Support Chief Leone in the Super Plunge
Chief Leone will dive into the icy Chesapeake Bay 24 times in 24 hours starting Friday at 8 a.m. Chief Leone joins dozens of other Super Plungers to benefit Special Olympics Maryland. He has almost reached his $10,000 goal. Every dollar helps — donate today!
 
Request CRASE Training
Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training teaches survival techniques for an active shooter scenario, including what to expect when police arrive. This one-hour training is provided by request and can be taught at UMBPD facilities or we can even come to your office! Request CRASE training by contacting Sgt. Thaddeus Baker. 
 
Eutaw Street Resource Fair
The SONS of Phoenix are holding a resource fair Saturday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 7 N. Eutaw St. All community members are invited, and donations are welcome!
 
UMBPD and OEM PIO Named UMBrella Person of the Year — On the Rise
Carin Morrell, MA, UMBPD and Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Public Information Officer (PIO), has been named the 2022 UMBrella Person of the Year — On the Rise. Morrell received the award for achieving growth and overcoming challenges by utilizing UMBrella mentorship and professional development opportunities. Learn more. 
 
OEM Receives Governor’s Citation for COVID-19 Joint Vaccination Site 
The multidisciplinary team that set up the SMC Campus Center COVID-19 joint vaccination site received a Governor’s Citation on Feb. 22 for its work. Members of OEM played an important role in the effort, which vaccinated more than 40,000 people. Learn more.
 
FirstNet Partnership Supports OEM Efforts
OEM worked with FirstNet to support COVID-19 vaccination efforts by establishing a secure and reliable Wi-Fi network throughout the facility. The partnership continues to support public safety initiatives at UMB. Learn more.
 
Laboratory Incident Response
To reduce threats to health and safety, it is imperative that research personnel understand the basic procedures of emergency and spill response. 
 
At a minimum, all lab members should be familiar with and appropriately trained in:
