We’re all juggling busy schedules, work, family, and a thousand other commitments. It can be hard to add even one more thing to your plate (like, say, reading a public safety newsletter). 
 
Safety at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is important to our entire community, which is why we send out this monthly public safety newsletter. It’s one more way we try to reach our community with updates, resources, and more. 
 
Starting in June, this newsletter will be available by subscription only. If you want to continue to get the latest information about public safety at UMB, you will need to subscribe to our newsletter. By subscribing, you will continue to receive this newsletter monthly, just as you have been.
 
Please subscribe today, and encourage your friends and colleagues to do the same. Your safety is my No. 1 priority, and that includes keeping our community informed.

Safety Tip of the Month: Graduation
A huge CONGRATULATIONS to everyone graduating this month! Remember these safety tips to ensure graduation day is one to celebrate:
  • Remember to lock your vehicle and put all graduation gifts out of sight in the trunk.
  • Plan ahead and know where you’re going.
  • Don’t text and drive – it can wait.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Put your cellphone and headphones away when walking outside.
 
UMB police officers will be at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena to cheer you on and keep you safe. Remember: If you see something, say something.
 
Welcome UMBPD’s New Comfort K9, Poe!
A new comfort K9 has joined UMBPD! Poe is a 2-year-old Great Dane mix from Cocoa Beach, Fla. While he adjusts to our University, please ask his handler, PFC Anthony Summers, before petting him or feeding him snacks. Learn more about Poe and schedule a visit.

Police Communications Center VoIP Phone Transition
In early June, the UMBPD Police Communications Center will transition from our analog phone lines to new Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. This transition will result in a clearer connection, fewer dropped calls, and better service. You can reach UMBPD day or night by calling 410-706-6882. 
 
167 Streetlights Replaced at UMB
Our beautiful campus is shining bright after 167 streetlights were replaced with energy-efficient white LED bulbs. UMBPD worked with Parking and Transportation Services and other partners to complete this massive project. Learn more here.
 
Be Prepared for Cyber Threats
On March 29, the UMB community received an email from the Center for Information Technology Services and the Office of Emergency Management about best practices to protect personal information from potential cybersecurity threats. Malicious cyberactivity also could potentially disrupt critical infrastructure. Be prepared by:
  • Keeping your gas tank full and/or your electric vehicle charged at 75 percent or more.
  • Having at least a 72-hour supply of emergency water and nonperishable food.
  • Keeping child care supplies and/or pet supplies, if applicable.
  • Checking that you have extra working batteries and/or portable chargers for cellphones, durable medical equipment, and flashlights.
  • If possible, keeping some cash on hand and in a safe location at home.
  • Refilling prescriptions early and purchasing frequently used over-the-counter medications.

How to Update Laboratory Door Signs
EHS has launched a 2-minute safety video highlighting the process for updating laboratory door signs.
 
Accurate laboratory door signs are essential for protecting worker safety and health and mounting an effective emergency response. In accordance with UMB’s Maintaining Laboratory Door Signs and Labels policy, all entryways to labs and/or chemical storage areas must display signage that indicates hazards, a principal investigator (PI), and at least one alternate emergency contact.
 
Use your UMB credentials to request updated signage from MyEHS for free. EHS will deliver and post the signage. Call EHS at 410-706-7055 for questions/concerns.
