September 2022

Sept. 15, 2022

Dear UMB Community:

Yesterday, we celebrated my swearing-in ceremony and one-year anniversary as your chief of police. Though the event was initially delayed due to COVID-19, I was touched to see so many of you attend. Your support means the world to me.

As I reflect on one year as chief, I’m proud of the progress we’ve made. Within the past year, we developed an innovative partnership with the University of Maryland School of Social Work; created an equity, diversity, and inclusion task force; and used data-driven policing strategies to decrease crime on campus. There is still much work to be done, and I am honored to lead our incredible University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) employees for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Thomas Leone, MSL
UMB Chief of Police

Safety Tip of the Month
Get to know our UMBPD security officers! We call our security officers the “eyes and ears” of our department. They can be easily found at the front desks in UMB buildings, walking the street, driving our Safe Ride vans, providing Safe Walks, and sitting in our security booth. Security officers wear a red shirt and yellow reflective vest if they are outside.

Why is this our monthly safety tip? Our security officers are a valuable resource if you need help. Step inside a UMB building and they will be happy to assist you. We love our security officers, and you will, too!

EHS Launches ChemTracker Chemical Inventory Management: Available Now
Wet laboratories contain a variety of hazardous, highly toxic, corrosive, flammable, and explosive chemicals. Maintenance of an accurate chemical inventory is an important element of laboratory hazard management. EHS launched the ChemTracker chemical inventory module and will work with researchers in the coming months to import chemical inventories into the system. ChemTracker inventories can be accessed online, includes an easy-to-use reconciliation tool for keeping your inventory up to date, and is linked to a robust database of chemicals to guide future training opportunities and help you store chemicals safely. For more information, see EHS’ ChemTracker webpage.
