Welcome back to another amazing year at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). I always love the start of a new semester when our University is bustling with excited students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Safety Tip: Prevent Unauthorized Entry
Remember to always swipe your UMID at the red/green podium when entering a UMB building. If someone tries to follow you inside the building without swiping their UMID, please alert a security officer. Thank you for helping to keep our community safe!
 
Crosswalks Get a Face-Lift
Many crosswalks across the UMB campus were repainted over the holiday break. More visible crosswalks on campus will help keep our community safe. This effort was spearheaded by Polly Thomas in the Office of Real Estate and Space Management, who worked with Baltimore City to complete the project. Thank you for your hard work!
R.A.D. Training Registration Open Now!
Advanced Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) training registration is open! This new 12-hour course is free for those who have completed a Basic R.A.D. course. Advanced R.A.D. runs from Feb. 13 to March 7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. or 5 to 6:30 p.m. Space is limited. 
 
The Basic R.A.D. Spring Semester course runs March 26 to April 30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. or 5 to 6:30 p.m. Space is limited. Learn more about Basic and Advanced R.A.D. and sign up today. 
 
Wheel Lock Giveaway 
Across the country, Kia and Hyundai vehicle thefts have risen by more than 1,000% since 2020. While crime on campus remains low, UMB Police and Public Safety has worked with Hyundai Motor America to receive wheel locks to prevent vehicles from being stolen. 
 
 
Meet UMB Police and Public Safety
Our police and security officers can be easily found throughout campus. Members of our team also attend fairs and events throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to ask public safety questions, get to know our officers, and receive some free swag. 
 
Upcoming events include the University of Baltimore New Student Orientation Resource Fair on Jan. 23 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center and the UMB Wellness Fair on April 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SMC Campus Center. We hope to see you there!

We especially want to recognize Security Officer Evelyn Greenhill, who is celebrating 25 years of service with UMB Police and Public Safety this month, as well as PFC Bernard Taylor and PFC Antwuan Fletcher, who are retiring from the department. Thank you for your service to our community!

Carbon Monoxide Safety
Often called the invisible killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, and colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, and more) burn completely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide. Learn how to stay safe from carbon monoxide poisoning. 
Fire Extinguisher Training
Fire extinguisher training opportunities are available all semester! Attendees will learn the basics of fires and fire extinguishers before getting hands-on experience with a fire extinguisher simulator. Our next class is scheduled for Feb. 7 from 2 to 3 p.m. Space is limited. Learn more and sign up now.

Take a moment to ensure that your information is current in UMB Alerts. In addition to sending a UMB Alert text message and email, weather-related closings and delays will be posted on the UMB webpage, UMB social media accounts, and on the emergency information hotline (410-706-8622). Please note: Weather-related delays and closures are no longer sent to local news media outlets.
Emergency Preparedness Now Available Online
Learn what to do during an emergency, where to find lifesaving equipment, and much more! You can start the training online now or request in-person training by contacting emergencymanagement@umaryland.edu. 
 
Emergency Preparedness Training is one part of the Preparedness Pro digital credential. Learn more about our series of preparedness trainings at UMB, including Active Assailant, Stop the Bleed, CPR/AED, and Fire Extinguisher training.
SciShield Online Lab Safety Training
EHS uses the SciShield (formerly BioRAFT) software platform to manage research lab profiles, including members, hazards, certain radiation safety functions, and annual inspections. The training will go live this month; hazards and members must be confirmed annually.
  • EHS compliance training is transitioning from HRS’ Percipio to SciShield this month. See the EHS course directory and look out for assignment emails soon. 
  • Training requirements are linked to your SciShield profile, so your member list and their job activities must be up to date. Citations for failing to confirm your members, job activities, and hazards annually will begin this year. 
  • Call EHS at 6-7055 for any questions or concerns!
