John "J.R." Jones

Portrait of John You may not know his name, but chances are you’ve met Cpl. John “J.R.” Jones on campus. Whether he’s handing out slices of pizza or walking Comfort K-9 Lexi, Jones has been fostering positive relationships in the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) community for the past 14 years.

“My greatest achievement as a law enforcement officer is my positive, approachable, upbeat character that I have with the different schools, fellow officers, and the community that I serve,” Jones says. In fact, he says his favorite part of being an officer is being out in the community and able to build positive relationships.

You also may see Jones pull up outside when you use the mobile UMB app to request a Safe Ride. He encourages students to use the service, to be aware of their surroundings, and to ask for assistance whenever needed. Jones says he constantly tries to reinforce safety tips. When you see him on campus, ask him for some of his favorites!

Jones provides support and comfort to UMB community members. When an employee was robbed on campus last month, Jones called to follow up and offer resources. “The attention and care I was given by the police officers was impressive,” the employee said.

Before joining the UMB Police Department, Jones worked for 30 years with the Baltimore Police Department. While there, he was assigned to the executive protection unit for Mayor Kurt Schmoke and had the honor of meeting Gen. Colin Powell.

Outside of work, Jones enjoys Navy football and has season tickets. He likes playing with his grandson, watching Hallmark movies, and visiting the happiest place on Earth — Disney World!
