LaToya Lucas

Security Officer LaToya LucasWhen you step into the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) Safe Ride van, you might just see Security Officer LaToya Lucas’ smiling face. Lucas has been a security officer with UMBPD for four years and was proud when she became one of the Safe Ride drivers.

“I enjoy working with the public," she says. “[I like] to be a secure presence in people’s lives and make sure students and staff are safe.”

Starting in November 2019, the UMB community could request a Safe Ride using the UMB Mobile app. The new system allows riders to see wait times, know when their driver arrives, and reduces call volume for UMBPD communications officers (sometimes called dispatchers). Community members without a smartphone can still call for a Safe Ride at 410-706-6882.

In her role, Lucas promotes this new system for requesting a Safe Ride. “Just download the app! It’s a great way to get around campus safely.”

When she joined the department, Lucas knew the position would serve as a great steppingstone in her criminal justice career. She continues to make strides and is considering becoming a police officer. Outside of work, Lucas enjoys writing and playing basketball.
