As a recent graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Shalini Chandrakumar wants students to enjoy their time in school. “These years fly by,” she says. “Make lifelong friends and always be safe.”

Chandrakumar is one of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department’s (UMBPD) newest Police Communication Operators (PCO). “I like learning the technology behind everything and getting to learn new systems,” she says. 

Being a PCO also meant starting fresh for Chandrakumar, since being a PCO didn't directly apply to her degree work in school. She says hard work, studying, and practicing have helped her to overcome the challenges of a new career. She looks forward to growing in the field and as a person. 

Chandrakumar’s most memorable moment on the job was completing a major call almost completely unassisted. As far as accomplishments? “Becoming the April Spotlight!”

Outside of work, the New York City native likes to spend time with friends and family, play basketball, and dance.
