Sherrell Smith

Sherrell Smith Headshot“Make every day count.” That’s the advice Security Officer Sherrell Smith has for those new to the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) community. Smith has been a security officer in different private companies for seven years. Now, she says she’s grateful to do something she loves.

“Being a security officer is a steppingstone towards a better career,” Smith says. “One day, I want to either join corrections or become a law enforcement officer.”

Smith says she enjoys helping people and making them feel safe. When she meets someone who is frustrated or upset, she says she goes into the situation with empathy, understanding, and an open mind.

“I meet so many different kinds of people, some of whom I’ve become great friends with!” she says.

Outside of work, Smith likes to work on do-it-yourself projects, paint, and travel. She also has FIVE dogs: Kashton, Nala, Baby, Chapula, and Charlie!
