Matthew Cherrington

Matthew Cherrington bioPolice officer Matthew Cherrington has been with the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Department of Police and Public Safety for about a month, but he’s not new to the city of Baltimore.

Cherrington worked as an officer with the Baltimore Police Department for more than two years before coming to UMB.

“There’s a lot of rich history in this city and at UMB,” he says. He encourages our faculty, staff, and students to learn and appreciate the city’s culture. “Sometimes there are more similarities than differences.”

Cherrington says he became a police officer to help others. “I believe it to be a noble profession,” he says. His favorite part of the job is being able to solve problems for people and provide comfort to those who are going through difficult times. “As police officers, we can be a light to them.”

As a new officer at UMB, Cherrington says he’s focusing on providing the best service he can to faculty and students. Outside of work, he enjoys reading and traveling and describes himself as a movie buff!
