Dear Colleagues:

I am delighted to announce the establishment of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Council for the Arts & Culture, a group dedicated to enriching life on campus and in the city through robust arts and culture programming.

The council will promote the use of University spaces for the visual and performing arts and provide opportunities for the UMB community to experience art at partnering institutions. Projects will include exhibiting artwork in UMB buildings and public areas, arranging visits to museums and performing arts centers, hosting arts and cultural events for the UMB and larger communities, and engaging in a scholarly exploration of the relationship between art and science.

A group of leaders from the University and the community will serve on the council’s standing committee. UMB students, faculty, and staff — three apiece — will be appointed to two-year terms. The full council will meet at least quarterly to plan and implement components of the program.

I invite students, faculty, and staff to nominate themselves for a seat on the council. Students who expect to graduate within two years may still apply and, if selected, serve out their term to graduation. Please visit Council for the Arts & Culture to submit an application.

The deadline for nominations is Jan. 15, 2015. The council’s standing committee will review all nominations and submit its recommendations to me. I’ll then announce the full council membership in February.

UMB has dedicated itself to improving the human condition. By promoting meaningful experiences with art and culture, by celebrating the full range of creative expression, we undoubtedly advance our progress toward this goal.
