Budget Reductions

September 14, 2020

Dear UMB Employees,

Last week, the University System of Maryland announced that system institutions would share their plans for dealing with the budget impacts of the pandemic. Throughout our COVID-19 response, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) recovery teams have worked diligently to minimize the financial impact of budget cuts. We are at a point where some additional steps need to be taken in response to the state budget appropriation reductions and declines in revenues from operations of campus and school activities. Except for a few circumstances outlined below, no other staff or faculty at UMB are affected by currently needed reductions.

I have authorized temporary salary reductions for senior leadership. I will be taking a 10 percent salary reduction while the provost, deans, and vice presidents will take a 5 percent salary reduction effective Sept. 13, 2020. In addition, the School of Medicine will make some temporary reductions in faculty compensation due to shortfalls in budgeted clinical income.

I have had ongoing, consistent dialogue with all of the deans and vice presidents pertaining to the unique budgetary needs of their units and will continue to do so. As the FY21 and FY22 state budget revenues are known, additional actions affecting faculty and staff compensation may be needed.

I appreciate the dedication and commitment of the UMB community as we face the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects together. Thank you for your continued efforts to stay safe and to keep your community safe.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
