Retirement Announcement

July 13, 2020

Dear UMB Community,

I write to share with you that Thomas "Tom" J. Sullivan, CFRE, MS, has announced his retirement and resigned his position as University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) chief development officer (CDO) and vice president, and president and CEO of the University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation, Inc. (UMBF) effective today, Monday, July 13. James L. Hughes, MBA, senior vice president and chief enterprise and economic development officer, will serve as interim chief philanthropy officer and interim president of the foundation board until a national search is completed.

Tom served as the driver of, and key strategist behind, the successful engagement, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of principal and transformational gifts to UMB. Over his career, he led or contributed to philanthropy programs that have raised $1 billion in charitable investment.

Tom kicked off UMB's $750 million Catalyst Campaign, which has generated over $565 million to date. In addition to the campaign, campuswide philanthropy efforts raised approximately $334 million. Last year, Planned Giving gifts increased 124 percent and foundation grant awards topped $1.8 million. During Tom's tenure, UMB implemented Predictive Analytics and Modeling, encompassing a variety of statistical techniques to identify areas of opportunity for fundraising, and grew the philanthropy staff to 36 members, including the addition of three major gift officers. As president of UMBF, Tom grew board membership with significant gender, ethnic, and professional diversity to 44 active members -- an addition of 20 new members since his arrival at UMB.

I know you will join me in thanking Tom for his service and wishing him well in his retirement.

Sincerely,

Bruce Jarrell, MD, FACS
Interim President
