Dear UMB Community,

I write to share with you that Susan Gillette, JD, has announced that she will retire as University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) vice president and general counsel July 31, 2022. Alana Kyriakakis, JD, will serve as acting general counsel until a national search is completed.

In 1981, Susan left private practice and joined UMB as an assistant to the president for legal affairs. Within a few years, she led the establishment of the Office of University Counsel at UMB. She has contributed four decades of professional expertise to UMB, with primary areas of concentration on corporate and governance issues, tax-exempt issues, legal relationships of UMB with the University of Maryland Medical System and other affiliated organizations, immigration compliance, and public ethics and conflict of interest concerns.

Susan has been a tremendous colleague with a breadth of knowledge and experience at UMB that cannot be replaced. We have been fortunate to have her at the helm of the Office of University Counsel. I am grateful to have worked with her.

I know that you join me in wishing her a well-deserved retirement.
