Appointments and Promotions

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is dedicated to fostering a vibrant academic community by promoting excellence in teaching, research, clinical activity, and service. The faculty appointment, promotion, and tenure (APT) process plays a crucial role in this endeavor, as it provides a structured system for evaluating and recognizing the achievements of our faculty.

At UMB, the APT process is governed by the University System of Maryland (USM) APT Policy and the UMB APT Policy. Both policies set forth the criteria and standards for appointment, promotion, and tenure at the University.

It is important to note that each school at UMB has its own APT policy that must be followed. These policies vary across schools with regard to process and criteria, but all are aligned with the USM APT Policy and the UMB APT Policy.

Questions about school-related APT policies should be addressed to the Dean’s Office in the respective school. Questions about the UMB or USM policies can be addressed to the Office of the Provost at provost@umaryland.edu.

User Roles and Trainings

In Interfolio Review, Promotion, and Tenure, there are different roles that have different levels of access to materials and actions within the system.

Anyone added to Interfolio RPT is automatically called a user. Users have the most basic and restricted access in the system. Once a user is added to a committee, they are often referred to in that context as Committee Members. A user must be added to a committee in order to view a candidate’s packet, download documents (if allowed), and leave comments (if allowed) on the particular case they have access to.

Committee Managers possess all of the capabilities of Committee Members, plus a few more. Most noticeably, Committee Managers have the power to move a case backward or forward after a committee has finished reviewing it. In addition, Committee Managers have communication powers within the system; they can email both the candidate and committee members from within the product and can record committee votes in the program.

Administrators are the users with the most power within Interfolio RPT. In addition to being able to access documents, email candidates and committees, and move a case forward or backward, Unit Administrators can create templates, forms, and cases for the units to which they have access. Typically, at UMB, Dean’s Office staff are administrators within schools.

Institutional Administrators are administrators at the highest level of an institution. Staff within the Office of the Provost at UMB are Institutional Administrators.

The following trainings are offered on the Interfolio website and provide basic information for different user groups:
