WHO can apply: Current students enrolled in UMB and UMBC graduate programs.

WHO we serve: Students, post-docs, faculty, and staff in UMB’s seven schools.

WHAT we do: Peer Writing Consultants perform a variety of virtual and in-person educational assistance to the UMB community. We consult individually with peers on their writing projects, conduct workshops, facilitate Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs), coordinate wellness activities, and more.

WHERE: We offer face-to-face sessions and online sessions, using video/audio and email. Consultants work in-person in the Writing Center located in the SMC Campus Center. Options for remote work at the Writing Center are bound by policies that regulate student employment. UMBC graduate students working as Peer Writing Consultants may consider taking the UMBC Transit Downtown Line

WHENRegular hours for the Writing Center are Monday-Friday, 10AM-5PM. Evening (5-8PM) and Saturday (10AM-3PM) hours are available but limited. Some hours are available during summer break, but not other breaks.

  • Most consultants work 6 hours/week. Consultants can work as little as 3 hours a week and up to 10 hours a week, depending on need and availability.  
  • We ask consultants to commit to working with us for at least one full academic year. 
  • Some required professional development sessions take place on weekends.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES

Under the supervision and direction of the Writing Center Director, Associate Director, and Writing Specialist, Writing Consultants perform the following duties:

  1. In every consultation and workshop, apply research-based strategies for centering linguistically and culturally diverse writing practices as academic and social norms. 
  2. Provide individual feedback to Writing Center clients during 45-minute consultations in the Writing Center and online.
  3. Contribute to or originate projects that support the Writing Center staff community and writers at UMB (e.g. facilitate Writing Accountability Groups, conduct wellness activities, research new writing/consultation resources, and many more options). 
  4. Learn and apply the approaches presented in the annual Writing Center consultant professional development series, monthly cohort meetings, and other training sessions. Complete all assignments for training during paid hours. 
  5. First-year consultants only: Participate actively in the Baltimore Writing Center Project (BWCP) throughout the first year of employment.
  6. Attend staff meetings to collaborate on adjustments and improvements to writing center practice.
  7. Develop digital and non-digital writing resources for use by clients and consultants.
  8. Participate in collaborative efforts to develop and deliver writing-related workshops, peer review sessions for academic courses, campus outreach initiatives, and other community- and public-facing services. 
  9. Complete other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Meaningful experience with academic/scientific writing in undergraduate career and beyond.
  • Good faith commitment to attend all consultant professional development programs throughout the year, and willingness to continually learn, reflect on, and apply new theory and practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience as a peer tutor, ideally in a writing center.
  • Previous teaching experience, ideally with adult learners.
  • Previous anti-racist coursework or activism.
  • Background in science writing.
