Apply to Become a Writing Center Fellow

Fellowship Details

WHO can apply: Current students enrolled in UMB and UMBC graduate and professional programs.

WHO we serve: Students in UMB’s seven schools.

WHAT we do: UMB Writing Center Fellows perform a variety of virtual and in-person educational assistance, primarily through one-on-one peer consultations. Most of our clients ask for feedback on their course assignments, but we also focus on theses, dissertations, CVs, cover letters, publications, grants, etc.

HOW we work: We offer face-to-face sessions and online sessions, using video/audio and email. Fellows will consult in-person in the Writing Center located in the SMC Campus Center. Options for remote sessions are possible on a case-by-case basis.

WHEN we work: Regular hours for the Writing Center are Monday-Friday, 10AM-5PM. Evening (5-8pm) and weekend (Saturday 11-4pm) hours are available but limited. The Center is open mostly in the fall and spring semesters, with limited hours during January and over the summer. Most fellows work 6-8 hours/week. Fellows can work as little as 3 hours a week and up to 15 hours a week, depending on need and availability.

  • We ask fellows to commit to working for us for at least one full academic year.
  • Required professional development sessions may take place on weekends.

FELLOWSHIP AWARD

Writing Center fellows receive a stipend each fall and spring semester that is based on their schedule. The fellowship payment is calculated on the basis of $17 per hour of duties completed. Fellows must check with their institution’s financial aid office to determine any necessary changes to their financial aid award. Fellows need to be aware that the funds for their awards will be used up to pay any outstanding bills for tuition.

The award will be applied to fellows’ financial aid accounts at UMB in December (fall semester) and April (spring semester).. The award will be distributed in the form of either a refund or a reduction of loans. This distribution method is determined by UMB’s Office of Student Financial Assistance. The Writing Center has no role or influence over the distribution method of this award. The award is not automatically renewable.
