Dimensions of Wellness

The following is a list of resources for eight dimensions of wellness. For each dimension, you will find descriptions and links to UMB resources. Feel free to contact us if you know of other resources we should add to the list.

Physical Wellness

Physical Wellness is the ability to apply your knowledge, motivation, commitment, behavior, self management, attitude, and skills toward achieving your personal fitness and health goals. Physical wellness is more than just the absence of disease. The physical dimension of wellness is concerned with building a healthy, strong, and resilient body. Such a body receives proper nutrition, sleep, and activity while being protected from disease and injury. As a result, you are more physically fit and energetic, have a strong immune system, and are primed for longevity. Physical wellness is protective against the stress and demands encountered in graduate and professional school.

Below are some UMB physical wellness resources.

Spiritual Wellness

What is spiritual wellness?

Spiritual wellness practices can be enacted by individuals in unique ways and may include a set of guiding beliefs, principles, or values that can give meaning and purpose to one’s life.

Participation in a community of faith, ethical conduct, compassionate service, and concern for societal needs can be connected to spiritual wellness. Organized religions may also help many individuals develop spiritual health.

Religion, however, is not the only source or form of spiritual wellness. Many individuals may find meaning and purpose in their lives through nature, art, meditation, or good works — or from engaging with loved ones. Spiritual and ethical wellness can also encompass a respect and appreciation for differing values and beliefs.
