Specialty Recycling Collection Event at the Campus Center and Lexington Building

Monday, April 1 - Tuesday, April 30

Recycle books, alkaline batteries, ink/toner cartridges, electronics, and plastic bags and film in designated bins in the L\lobbies of the SMC Campus Center and the 620 W. Lexington St. building.

Alkaline Batteries: AAA, AA, C, D, 9-Volt

Electronics: computers, laptops, servers, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, switches, routers, wire, cellphones, tablets, communications equipment

Books: hardcover and softcover

Toner/Ink Cartridges: laser and inkjet printer cartridges

Plastic Bags and Film: shopping bags, produce bags, Ziploc bags, bread bags, cereal bags, bubble wrap, plastic overwrap, air pillows

Wellness Fair at the Campus Center

Monday, April 1, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The fair is composed of more than 50 vendors, student leaders, campus partners, and community organizations that come together to share a wealth of resources designed to help attendees prioritize their physical, mental, and emotional wellness. 

Join the Office of Sustainability for a live cooking demo (and sampling) of a delicious plant-based recipe. Learn how easy, affordable, and delicious plant-based cooking can be. Limit of five people per session.

**Special note: The recipe will contain peanuts. Individuals with nut allergies are not encouraged to register.

Meet the Founder: Chris Amendola of foraged

Wednesday, April 3, from noon - 1 p.m.

Join The Grid and Office of Sustainability as we welcome Chris Amendola, chef and owner of foraged, a local, hyper-seasonal restaurant focused on natural flavors and local ingredients. With a modern American cooking style, Amendola delivers a unique, memorable journey through the seasons for foraged diners, setting the stage for an unparalleled culinary experience.

This event is in-person at The Grid (HSHSL, 3rd Floor). Refreshments will be served.

Plant Bliss Food Fair 

Wednesday, April 3, from 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Please join the Office of Community Engagement for a Vegan Happy Hour and Food Fair at 801 W. Baltimore St. (Invent and Advance Rooms)! This event is an opportunity for small, locally owned businesses to show institutional and individual consumers food options available to them for catering, delivery, and/or near-campus dining. It’s also an opportunity for vendors to sample products from Plant Bliss, a Black woman-owned business based in Pigtown that specializes in sauces and spreads that make it easy and affordable to integrate vegan options into their menus.

Campus Cleanup

Tuesday, April 9, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Join the Office of Sustainability, Environmental Services, and Staff Senate for a trash cleanup of campus to #KeepUMBBeautiful! Drop by our basecamp at the main entrance of HSRF III at the beginning of your shift to check in and get supplies. You will be assigned to help clean a specific zone of campus during your shift(s). Swing back by basecamp at the end of your shift(s) to drop off your full trash bags. Basecamp will be located at the main entrance to HSRF III (670 W. Baltimore St.).

ECO-Fest

Friday, April 12, from noon - 3 p.m.

Join ECO for the second annual ECO-Fest, its anual spring Earth Day celebration, outside of HSRF III. This event’s purpose is to connect and engage students in environmental opportunities and sustainable actions. This event is hoping to generate greater visibility to the interconnections between the climate crisis, our personal lives, and our aspiring professions. Co-sponsored by the USGA.

For the plant/book/clothing swaps, please feel free to bring any of the following gently used items you’d like to get rid of:
- Plant supplies, cuttings, pots, etc.
- Books of any kind
- Clothing of any kind (no undergarments)

Pre-registration is not required but preferred. Anyone pre-registered by April 5 will be entered into a drawing for a B.Willow Plant Care gift bag. Register for the event here.

Bike Tune-Ups with Joe’s Bike Shop

Wednesday, April 17, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Come to the School of Nursing Courtyard for a free bike tune-up courtesy of Joe’s Bike Shop. Approximately 30 bikes will receive tune-ups; bikes will be accepted until 1:30 p.m. or the limit is reached. This event is sponsored by GreenSON.

Earth Day 5K with URecFit and Wellness

Thursday, April 18, from noon - 1 p.m.

All 5ks begin at the Campus Center at 621 W. Lombard St. at noon. Runs are free for everyone! The theme is Earthy Attire. Register for the event here.

The Effects of Climate Change on Global Health: Implications for Maryland 

Wednesday, April 24, 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Join our panel to learn about the latest scientific research on climate change and its impact on global health. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the challenges facing Maryland and potential solutions. Breakfast is included. This event will take place on the HSRF III Ground Floor in the Symposium Room (CR1010). This event is co-hosted by the School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health and the Office of Sustainability. Register for the event here.

Climate Change, Health and Society Panels at UMB 

Monday, April 15, from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Climate Stakeholders Panel

Addressing the adverse impacts of climate change requires robust environmental policies that not only safeguard our communities but also foster a more resilient economy. Coordination across state, regional, and federal agencies is necessary to develop successful adaptation and mitigation strategies. This panel brings together experts from state and federal agencies to discuss the intersection of science and policy.

Climate Community Panel

The Earth Day panel is sponsored by the Transform Mid-Atlantic and Eastern Region Campus Consortium.

The climate crisis requires action at all levels, especially local and regional levels, to build resilience and reduce emissions. This panel brings together community leaders for a discussion of the most effective ways to promote meaningful climate action locally. Panelists will share examples of successful approaches used in Baltimore, the state of Maryland, and the college town of Cambridge, Mass., and provide some ways in which we all can work together to protect our communities. Climate Advocacy Panel 

The panel will address ways to publicly support and advocate for change, through the lens of a variety of professions and industries that interact with legislation and policies. Join this discussion to learn from their experience and how it can inform your climate advocacy.
