Specialty Recycling Collection Event at the Campus Center and Lexington Building

Tuesday, April 1 - Wednesday, April 30

Recycle books, alkaline batteries, ink/toner cartridges, electronics, and plastic bags and film in designated bins in the lobbies of the SMC Campus Center and the 620 W. Lexington St. building. Please do not deposit non-alkaline batteries including lithium ion, nickel cadmium, rechargeable, etc.

Alkaline Batteries (both ends taped): AAA, AA, C, D, 9-Volt

Electronics: computers, laptops, servers, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, switches, routers, wire, cellphones, tablets, communications equipment

Books: hardcover and softcover

Toner/Ink Cartridges: laser and inkjet printer cartridges

Plastic Bags and Film: shopping bags, produce bags, Ziploc bags, bread bags, cereal bags, bubble wrap, plastic overwrap, air pillows

Campus Cleanup

Wednesday, April 2, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Join the Office of Sustainability and Environmental Services for a trash cleanup of campus to #KeepUMBBeautiful! Drop by our basecamp at the main entrance of HSRF III at the beginning of your shift to check in and get supplies. You will be assigned to help clean a specific zone of campus during your shift(s). Swing back by basecamp at the end of your shift(s) to drop off your full trash bags. Basecamp will be located at the main entrance to HSRF III (670 W. Baltimore St.).

Wellness Fair at the Campus Center

Tuesday, April 8, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The fair is composed of more than 50 vendors, student leaders, campus partners, and community organizations that come together to share a wealth of resources designed to help attendees prioritize their physical, mental, and emotional wellness. Learn more here.

Walking Wednesday: Wellness Week Edition

Join us for a walk to celebrate Wellness Week and Earth Month! We will meet outside the SMC Campus Center and will walk around down Baltimore, ending back at the SMC Campus Center.

Meet the Founder: Kevin Tu of Sustainabli

Tuesday, April 15, from noon - 1 p.m.

As part of UMB's celebration of Earth Month, we are excited to co-host a Meet the Founder event featuring Kevin Tu, a first-year medical student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Kevin Tu is the founder of Sustainabli, a startup promoting energy efficiency in laboratory and healthcare settings. As an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, College Park, Kevin founded the Green Labs program, where he developed the technology that would later become Sustainabli. The company's technology has been deployed across North America, reducing energy waste costs by $250,000 and cutting greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to driving around the world 70 times. Outside of medicine and Sustainabli, Kevin serves as a committee chair at the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories and helps lead the Million Advocates for Sustainable Science.

This event is in-person at The Grid (HSHSL, 3rd Floor). Lunch will be provided.

Swap Party with Launch Your Life (Employees Only) 

Event: Wednesday, April 16, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Donations: Tuesday, April 1 - Wednesday, April 2, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Join us for a Swap Party at the School of Pharmacy Atrium on April 16th from 11am-2pm. There will be items like plants, books, clothes, and more! If you have any items you would like to donate, please fill out the donation section of this form so we can expect you on April 1st or April 2nd from 11am-1pm in the lobby of the Lexington Building. This event is a collaboration between the Office of Sustainability and Launch Your Life.

Please note: items from the Swap Party are pre-owned and used and therefore could have risks associated with pre-owned condition, as there are with any second-hand item. Once items are donated, they can’t be checked back out. The purpose of this event is to bring items you are no longer using.

Planetary Health: Navigating the Anthropocene Crisis (hosted by the Office of International Service) 

Tuesday, April 22, from noon - 1 p.m.

The Anthropocene is characterized by the dominance of humans over our natural world. Dr. Carlos A. Faerron Guzmán, with the School of Graduate Studies, works to raise awareness of the threats to wellbeing now and into the future and inspire creative responses.

Wednesday, April 23, from 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Join us for a hybrid town hall will provide updates to the UMB community on progress toward the Sustainability Strategic Plan, and communicate ongoing and new campus sustainability initiatives, and address feedback and suggestions from the UMB community.

Climate Health Symposium

Thursday, April 24, from 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health and the UMB Office of Sustainability will co-host a panel discussion exploring the far-reaching consequences of climate change on public health, using both a global lens and looking specifically at challenges Maryland faces.
