LED Lighting Upgrade

Project

UMB is converting light bulbs in buildings across campus from fluorescent to LED.

Purpose

The purpose of the project is to save on electricity, reduce energy costs, and the associated carbon emissions. UMB’s electricity is generated from a variety of sources, including burning fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas. This process releases carbon into the atmosphere that contributes to climate change. The less electricity we use, the fewer emissions released into the air we breathe.

Once complete, this project is estimated to save 5,300,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) each year, which is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from 817 passenger vehicles being driven for one year.

Progress

As of April 22, 2024:

54.75 percent of campus square footage has been converted to LED bulbs.

Alignment with Strategic Plan:

Utilities and Emissions: Reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions from campus energy use by 35 percent by 2030 through efficiency projects.
